January Goal Setting

January Goal Setting

After an absolutely epic New Year’s Eve spent 13 stories above Times Square (see videos here and here), I’m ready to take 2014 by storm. While I’m not making any specific resolutions this year, you may have seen my list of 10 healthy mantras that I’m vowing to remember this year. I believe that living every day with intention will keep you on the path to where you want to go. I write a Looking Back post at the end of every month, which is a fun way to recap what has happened in those last 30 days. But to live with intention, I’d like to write a Goal Setting post at the beginning of every month, as well. Achieving smaller, realistic goals act as building blocks to tackling the bigger ones.

My January Goal: In all honesty, my original January goal was going to be to run 100 miles in the next 31 days. This is a goal that’s being completed on the Nike+ Running app, and I was eager to take part. After doing the math and realizing that would mean running 25 miles per week, or 5+ miles every run, I realized it might not be a smart goal. Could I complete that mileage? Yes, I do think I could. Would my body and other areas of my life be happy with me? No. Two months ago, I was brand new to running. I now run 4-5 times per week and am up to 6-mile training runs. However, I don’t think it would be smart to jump up to 100 miles in January. It’s not my intention to burn myself out physically or mentally this month. So, what will my goal be? I ran over 50 miles in December and still want to challenge myself.January Goal
Setting my goal at 80 miles, or about 20 per week, is a smarter goal for my level. I’ll also still have time and energy to fit in two cross training workouts per week. When I reach my goal, I’d like to get a massage at the end of the month to loosen up my muscles.

Two Smaller Goals:

  • Connect with and learn from other fitness bloggers more often, especially those in New York City.
  • Increase my half marathon fundraising from 60% to 70%. This means raising $280. Help me out!

Well + Good NYC Goal: This year, my favorite New York City-based health and fitness website has partnered with Athleta to create a Well + Good Healthiest Year Ever series. They’re offering 12 months of tips to live your best year, with the help of some fantastic wellness experts. Each month, I plan to either follow or reflect on the tip that’s given. This month’s tip comes from Business and Life Coach Marie Forleo. This woman’s website is sassy and inspirational. While she does focus on career, I think Marie’s January advice is relevant to my recent fitness goals.

When I first registered for my half marathon, I mentioned that I’ve been wanting to achieve this goal for awhile but was too afraid to start. After being inspired by the ING New York City Marathon in November, I registered for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in D.C. without letting myself over-think it. I didn’t feel ready but knew I could run 13.1 miles if I made a commitment to start somewhere. I went from running 2-3 miles at a time to running 5-6 one month later. Here’s to running 80 more miles in January!

What are you hoping to achieve this month?
