As summer winds down, I’ve been searching for every opportunity to take my workout outdoors. All of my runs take place outside, but most of my cross training happens inside. I was excited for the chance to combine the two with a Friendspire Fitness Remixed Run on the West Side Highway last week. Run, bootcamp, run, yoga, wine, cheese. Amazing.

Friendspire Fitness, founded earlier this year by blonde besties Emily Hope Turner and Claire Gould, is a lifestyle company spreading positivity, wellness, and philanthropy through fitness events. E + C describe Friendspire’s mission as follows: “We create events that bring friends (new and old) together. We inspire others to view fitness as something fun and uplifting rather something exclusive. And above all, we empower our community to live in a world where health and happiness are within reach.”

This vision to unite the fitness community was born when E + C met while working at Lululemon. They shared a love for movement but had come from different backgrounds. Claire is the self-described West Coast swimmer, TRX goddess, lover of Ke$ha. Emily is the Midwestern dancer, SoulCycle rockstar, lover of Beyonce. Together, they’ve been bringing together different types of New Yorkers at monthly events to share that love for movement. Think cardio dance, Zumba, parter conditioning, etc.

I was finally able to attend last week’s Friendspire event to sweat, socialize, and snack with Claire, Emily, and a crew of fantastic women. We met near Jane Street to stretch and introduce ourselves to one another. I was blown away by the kindness and diversity of the group. We split off into pace groups and ran 1.5 miles south to a grassy area near Chambers Street. Emily led a 15-minute bootcamp session, including planks, pushups, lunges, and squats. My legs were tired for the second leg of the run, but I was enjoying the conversation with new friends too much to care. When we arrived back at the starting point, the group completed a 10-minute yoga stretch as the sun set over the water. We finished the evening with a picnic spread of wine, cheese, fruit, veggies, hummus, and other healthy snacks. The group chatted about race training, and I think I may have been convinced to train for a triathlon in 2015. I exchanged email addresses and Instagram handles with a few new friends and left filled with happiness. You really have something going, E + C.
