About a week ago, a good friend of mine from college started a yoga blog. Sam is sharing yoga class reviews and other New York-based fitness experiences on Catching Dragonfly. One of her firsts posts is about Wanderlust Festival, which we’ll be attending together on Saturday.

“My interest in yoga was sparked when I moved to New York City two years ago. I’d long considered myself a worrier, but it wasn’t until my relocation to Manhattan that I realized I was the most anxious person I knew. Though I’d always been active, I’d yet to find a form of physical fitness that did as much for my mind and spirit as it did for my body. Luckily, I discovered yoga quickly and became hooked as I watched it change my DNA. A daily yoga practice continues to help me relieve agitation in my body, open my mind, enhance my creativity, find greater self awareness and approach life more peacefully.”

She chose to name her blog Catching Dragonfly after the tricky yoga pose also known as Grasshopper or Bird With a Broken Wing. This is a pose that Sam is working to master over time. To celebrate Sam’s blog launch, she and I decided to take some photos with Bekka Palmer. While blogging photo shoots are often staged and don’t show much personality, I wanted these shots to reflect my friendship with Sam. Creating, laughing, sweating, and more laughing.

I learned about Breather, a startup that created awesome spaces so you can take a much-needed break from your environment, on Twitter and thought it would be perfect for this shoot. Breather offers spaces in New York, Montreal, and now San Francisco that can accommodate up to 10 people. They’re sun-lit rooms that offer working stations, whiteboards, couches, reading materials, and Wi-Fi for about $20/hour. During our shoot, Sam and I were brainstorming unique ways to use the space–work meeting, book club, private yoga session, etc. I even have a monthly meetup idea for fitness bloggers in the works (Stay tuned, ladies). Huge thank you to the Breather team for having Sam and me as guests in Flatiron 2 last weekend! Check out Breather’s other spaces here.

I’m pretty sure Sam is a ninja, judging by those photos. I would search her for swords and nunchucks before being alone in a room with her again. Seriously though, those rooms are awesome! Knoxville does not have any cool spare rooms just hanging around (not that I know of anyways). Of course, my mind went immediately to the gutter on what these spaces might be used for… yeah. As long as shoes aren’t part of the “appropriate clothing” requirement, I think you two obeyed the rules. =)

Sam is pretty awesome. She’s a former cheerleader/dancer/gymnast, so she has “ninja” experience. The spaces are beautiful and perfect for a short break in such a busy city. You’re not alone in your “gutter” thinking. They actually address that on their website’s FAQ to try and avoid that sort of behavior haha.
