TomTom vs. Nike+ vs. Garmin GPS Watches

TomTom vs. Nike+ vs. Garmin GPS Watches

Training for a marathon has officially put me in the market for a GPS watch. While I’ve loved tracking my runs on the Nike+ Running App on my iPhone, I would like to have the option to track without carrying my phone. It would be great to not have to carry anything on my shorter, mid-week runs. After doing some research, especially reading DC Rainmaker’s GPS watch reviews, I’ve narrowed my search down to three options: TomTom Runner Cardio, Nike+ SportWatch, or Garmin Forerunner 15. Each model has its pros and cons. If you own one of these watches (or another one you love), I’d like to hear about personal experiences before making a decision. I have a Garmin 220 and I love it! Based on the pretty factor alone, I thought about getting the Nike watch, however after consulting with some other running friends (both of which did Chicago this year!), I decided it wasn’t the right fit. They said it’s pretty, but always reads fast (so you think your pace is something different than what it actually is) and that they’ve both had technical issues with it. I’ve had no problems with my Garmin thus far, so I’m happy to recommend it!

I find that across the board, Garmin watches have the best accuracy. Whenever I run in groups, the folks with TomTom-powered watches are always a bit off and the Garmin users are the most accurate. This only worsens/is more drastic the further you go. I trained for my first two marathons with the Nike+ (which is of course, TomTom) and had so many discrepancies with distances, which ultimately affected the pace I THOUGHT I was running at. I switched to Garmin and while it has it’s own issues, I prefer it over the TomTom 100%.
