If you had told me a year ago that I would fall in love with a treadmill class, I would have called you crazy. Since I started running in Fall 2013, I’ve mostly trained in Central Park and on the West Side Highway running path. I encourage new runners to train outside, to breathe the fresh air and take in the unobstructed view. I wondered how friends could complete long training runs on the dreadmill, if I could barely run a 5K in the gym. When Mile High Run Club launched in 2014, I didn’t visit because I told myself I wouldn’t like it. The studio was open for about a year before I attended my first class. I now visit once or twice per week. And I’m a stronger, more confident runner for it.
Mile High Run Club is the first boutique fitness studio dedicated to running. Each class, filled with 36 Woodway treadmills, focuses on interval and strength training. The intervals are strategically designed to make the most of your miles. MHRC offers a few different class formats (described below), costing $32 per visit. Classes are appropriate for both beginners and racers.
Studios — MHRC is located at 28 East 4th in Noho and at 24 West 25th in Nomad. Both locations include one large studio, plenty of electronic lockers, an apparel/fuel shop, and a spacious locker room. The studio itself is dim but can be lit with a rainbow of lights. Towels, water, and kettle bells are on hand for each runner. I often take a 7 or 7:30am class, so I shower at the studio before work. There are twice as many showers at the Nomad location, but both locker rooms provide toiletries and hair dryers for your convenience.
Instructors — I’ve taken class with many coaches. My favorites are Luke, Jes, Yusuf, and Debora.
Classes — MHRC offers four class types. Dash 28 is my favorite. The class, which is appropriate for all levels, is broken into 28 minutes of running and 10 minutes of strength training (plus warm up and cool down). The Distance is for advanced runners. It’s 60 minutes of continuous intervals and hills. High 45, which I’ve yet to take, is like the bridge between Dash 28 and Distance. It’s 45 minutes of continuous running. Finally, MHRC offers Outdoor Training Runs that explore lower Manhattan.
Marathon Training — Many of you know that the New York City Marathon lottery was on Tuesday. No, I didn’t get in. SPOILER ALERT. I am still running it. More about my registration in the next few weeks. Still, I wanted to note that MHRC offers marathon training plans with the purchase of a 50 Class Pack. Classes are cheaper when you buy in bulk. Plus, you can pay for the package over three months. I’ll be registering for a 16-week plan to train for the NYCM with MHRC. The plan includes a 30-minute consultation, advanced booking, and guided long runs.
If you live in New York and haven’t tried MHRC, I encourage you to give it a shot. The coaches are knowledgeable and encouraging. The equipment is top-notch. The classes will make you a faster runner. It’s a great way to mix up your training plan.
