I spent my 28th birthday at Propel Co:Labs. Aside from Propel’s presence at IDEA World earlier this month, the brand held a collaborative event in both New York and Los Angeles to launch its new flavored electrolyte waters. Keep reading to find out about the surprise musical guest, plus the three workouts that left my legs sore for days.

Overall, Co:Labs was an opportunity for Propel to bring some of the industry’s most popular workout classes into one space over four days–The Class by Taryn Toomey, Cobra Fitness Club, modelFIT, NW Method, Speedplay, Vixen Workout, Y7 Studio, and Yoga for Bad People. The event also included bars for braids, stickers, and smoothies.

I kicked off my birthday with a one-on-one training session with Lacey Stone. We started by discussing my marathon goals and how strength training benefits me as a runner. Lacey broke my session into three segments of four exercises. Each segment was repeated three times.

Lacey believes in fatiguing your muscles with heavy weights, rather than doing higher reps with lighter weights. Many of the exercises she planned were lateral or compound movements. As I completed each circuit, Lacey encouraged me to try a heavier weight for the next set. I loved that she coached me like an athlete. Her biggest piece of advice, other than getting a deep tissue massage, was that I need to build more confidence in my speed and strength.

After a lunch break, I returned to Co:Labs to have my hair and makeup done for a photo shoot. The Propel team also surprised me with birthday cupcakes before our evening workouts. By that time, about 25 other bloggers and editors arrived to take a mashup class with Kira Stokes and Nicole Winhoffer. My legs and glutes were already feeling Lacy’s training session, but I pushed through for more strength and some cardio dance. As a former dancer, I especially loved breaking it down with Nicole and her assistant. Her positive energy is infectious.

To close the event, Tori Kelly arrived for a surprise performance. I’ve had a girlcrush on Tori since her YouTube days and was impressed listening to her sing and play in person. She sang Should Have Been Us, Unbreakable Smile, and Nobody Love. I’d love to see her perform a full set!

While I was feeling these workouts for the next few days, I had an awesome time celebrating my birthday at Co:Labs. Stay tuned for more hydration tips as I continue marathon training through the rest of the summer. Fluids have been especially important during the recent heatwave.

What a fantastic way to celebrate your birthday, albeit a sweaty one! Haha. Very cool you got to work out with all those different trainers. I love Lacey’s perspective on using heavier weights to fatigue, versus multiple high reps.

Yes! It was so much fun to try a mashup of different styles. I’ll have to share some of Lacey’s strength movements on Instagram.
